POST-GRADUATE STUDY AT CAMBRIDGE BY UNIVERSITY LECTURER

Leaving Dunedin to-morrow to connect with the Tamaroa at Wellington is Mr Angus Ross, senior lecturer in history at the University of Otago. Mr Ross will sail for England to take up a Parker of Waddington Studentship at King’s College. Cambridge, where he will study for his Ph.D. degree, specialising in history. To enable him to take up this studentship, Mr Ross has come under the King’s College servicemen’s bursary scheme, which means that he will go on army strength as a servifceman. Mr Ross held the rank of major in the Second N.Z.E.F. The scheme was instituted in 1944 to assist New Zealand airmen who were disabled, King’s College contributing and the New Zealand Government assisting with the airman’s pay. At the end of the war, however, the scheme was enlarged to include all services, and in November last the announcement of the five final bursars before the scheme was closed was made. Mr Ross visited King’s College in 1944 when he was overseas, and whilo there the Provost of the college (Dr

J. T. Sheppard) told him that' he envied Oxford the Dominion students it had secured through the Rhodes Scholarships. He said at the time, and later endorsed it by letter, £hat he hoped that some scheme would be developed under which a number of carefully-selected students would go to Cambridge for post-graduate studies. Mr Rosfj-said to the ‘ Star ’ to-day that ofie of tne factors which had influenced Dr Sheppard in favour of his selection was that he was already on the staff of a’university and could establish liaison between Kind’s and the University of New Zealand. When the scheme can he introduced will depend on the extent of co-operation forthcoming in New Zealand in the way of contributions to balance those made by the college.
