FINED FOR FALSE INCOME TAX RETURN

■ False income tax returns made by Lawrence Patrick Howard resulted in his appearance in the Police .Court this morning before Mr J. D. Willis, S.M. He was stated by Mr J. J 3. Deaker,’ for the Commissioner of Taxes, to have; made false returns for the years ending March 31, 1943. 1944,* and 1945. Although Howard's wages;as a bar-i man at the. Kensington Hotel had been; only £2OO a year he had received meals • in addition, which made him liable to: put in a return. , Information had also; been received that lie was acting as-' agent for a bookmaker, and although he at first denied this jt was'subsequently found to. be true. The amount of tax involved was £96 12s 3d for the .three years, said Mr Deaker., Howard pleaded guilty through Mr A. G. Neill, who submitted ;that the amounts involved were relatively small. Howard had [had a very unfortunate time, 1 he said, and was aged; 62 years. It was true-about the‘book-' making, but he had been . only an; agent;, and had apparently not made much out of it. - • - ' \ On the 'first, three charges, which. dealt with failing to.send'in a returii, he was fined, the minimum £2. and on a fourth charge of making a false return he was fined £5. Costs and counsel’s fee were allowed. . .
