NEGROES SHOT DEAD IN ATTEMPTED ESCAPE FROM PRISON

NEW YORK,.July 12. Five negro convicts were shot dead and eight others wounded, two of them critically, while allegedly attempting to escape from a prison camp at Anguilla, 12 miles south of Brunswick, Georgia, this afternoon. Fourteen others surrendered. Warden W. G. Worthy said that » group of new prisoners who were sent out on a highway project refused to work and were brought back to camp, where they disobeyed his order to get out of the trucks. He called the county police, aud the negroes then left the trucks and were lined up in the prison enclosure. They broke ranks a few seconds later ana ran, to the barracks, crawled under the building, and ran towards the fence on the other side of the prison. Guard* and police opened fire with shotgun* and rifles. None of the prisoners w armed with firearms or knives, but several had short iron bars and sticks. Worthy said it was an all-negro prison with about 75 inmates. Of the five killed four were serving sentence* ranging from 3 to 26 years for burglary and had previous escapes listed iu their 1 records.
