RETAILERS PLAN CAMPAIGN FOR CENTENNIAL FUNDS

. A team of 36 prominent business men and women in Dunedin will undertake what is hoped to be a short campaign next week for contributions from retailers for the Otago Centennial Association’s all-purposes fund. A target of £IOO,OOO has been set for this fund, of which about £30,000 is already in hand. It is hoped that donations made by retailers will substantially raise the sum already in hand. ■ The intensive campaign will begin next Tuesday, and'retailers have been asked by the organising committee and the Otago Centennial Association to receive the collectors with nn t interest appropriate to sfich an historic event as the. centennial. The city and suburbs have, been zoned between St. Kilda and Normanby, and collectors from business houses in each zone will canvass neighbouring premises. All collectors will be able to supply information concerning the various projects, for centennial year, and will carry the necessary evidence of their authority to receive donations. An interim receipt will be given donors, arid an official receipt will later be posted from the office of the Otago Centennial Association. This will be the business people’s response to the Centennial Association’s appeal for funds, and we hope that the money will come forward quickly; ’ ’ said Mr J. Caldwell, the honorary secretary and treasurer of the combined Retailers’ Committee that is organising the campaign. “As the collectors are giving their own time to thp. cause, the coriimittee hopes that retailers will be prepared to respond readily to the appeal,” added Mr Caldwell. The Retailers’ Committee promoting the campaign was elected at a special meeting convened by the Mayor (Mr Cameron) recently. The chairman is Mr S. Lawn, and the members are Messrs H. C. Harford, J. C. Rigby, S. S. Hall, C. A. Kearns, M. Poulter, and J. Caldwell.
