MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SINGLES AT TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

LONDON, June 24. There were no surprises in the second day of the Wimbledon tennis .championships, when the second round of' the men’s singles and the first round of the women’s singles were played. Kramer was too severe and accurate for Spychala on the centre court. The Pole was frequently ohted in trying to match Kramer’s* speed Kramer punched the ball hard continually, and Spychala had difficulty in' handling his service. Bromiyieh had the young Swede, Bergelin, worried with aocuracy and deft placements. Bergelin did not pro), vide much real opposition. Pails was too severe for the Norwegian, Staubo, and won in straight, sets, although his form was far from good. Drobny was clearly superior to the Indian, Mehta, who had finesse but lacked speed. Drobny showed no weakness in any department of the game, and is regarded as a real threat to those seeded higher than he is. The match between Geoff. Brown and the Czecho-Slovakian, Cernik, was the best of the day. It was a game of alternate spells of brilliance and lapses by the Australian, and steady worrying play by the Czech. Brown hit mightily, but could not maintain his accuracy. He made no- mistake, however, in the final set, ip which he rocked, in some terrific services.
