RACING NEWS AND VIEWS

fßy Observer. | Fixtures. June ' 28.—Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club. June 28, Greymouth Jockey Club. July 5, 12, 19.—Wellington Racing Club. July 12.—Waimato District Hunt Club. July 19.—South Canterbury District Hunt Club. , July 19.—Manawatn Hunt Club. July 19, 26. Avondale Jockey Club. July 26.—Christchurch Hunt Club. July 26.—Itangjtikei Hunt Club Qualifying Runs. For the convenience of owners and trainers preparing horses for forthcoming hunt fixtures, the Otago Hunt Club will hold qualifying runs at North Taieri to-morrow, Friday, and Saturday. Slack Period.

Only two meetings will be held in New Zealand'on Saturday, these being the second day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s fixture and the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting. The following week the first day of the Wellingtoh meeting will be the only racing fixture. Sir Michael.

Sir Michael, who is being kept in light work at Addington, is to be mated with a few mares next stud season. Included in the mares booked to him arc Cantata, Betty Axworthy, Val Rey, and a mare by Calumet Axworth from Maureen Galindo.

Attley Rehandicapped. A Brisbane message states that the star Victorian sprinter, Attley, has been penalised 41b for the Doomben Ten Thousand to be ruh on Saturday week. This will bring his weight'to 10.7,. or 21b more than Bernborough carried to victory last year. Two Grand has gone to 8.7 for the Doomben Cup and 8.4 for the Ten Thousand.

Trotting Season. The trotting season is virtually over, and only four more events remain to be run. Two of these will be decided at Greymouth this week, and one harness race at the Waimate and South Canterbury Hunt fixtures will complete the season. The first big meeting in the new term is the Metropolitan fixture at Addington in August. Freely Engaged. Royal Writ has been freely nominated for the Wellington ■ meeting, his engagements including steeplechases, hurdle races, and flat races. In the schooling he has done over country at Wingatui he has shaped well for a novice, and lie would have excellent prospects in the minor, steeplechases at Trentham if reserved for those events. He has won three hurdle races during the current season, but has yet to race over countrv. Unlucky Hurdler. Ruling Moment registered his sixth second over hurdles when he followed The Raker home at Ashburton on Saturday. He has yet to win over hurdles, but he’ has raced most consistently and may have more luck when he makes his debut over country. He has schooled impressively over the steeplechase fences and is booked for a trip to. Trentham, where lie has been nominated, for the cross-country races, Reappearing on Saturday. Yasda, who has upt raced since winning the Hutt ‘Handicap at Trentham m March, is down to appear again, at Hastings on Saturday. He is also engaged in most of the open races at Trentham. next month, and the outing this week will serve to bring him to his best for the more important races. Being by Coronach, lie should not be troubled by heavy going, most of that sire’s progeny having shown a. preference for winter going. Overdue Win,

■Benghazi, winner of the event for trotters on the second day of the recent Wellington meeting, did not succeed ont. ; of his turn as he had not paid a dividend in 13 previous starts during the season An aged gelding by Wrack, lie is trained by T. J. Smith, who has won twice with the gelding in the past two seasons. Under the care of W. ill. Butt as a six-year-old he showed some promise by winning twice, while he also collected two stakes last season, before being taken over by Smith. Big Things Predicted. Concrete, who won his first race in the North Island recently, evidently impressed the critics by his performance, and already he is beinp discussed as a likely candidate for the Winter Oup in August. It would certainly be expecting i big things of him to win one of the hardest 1 -mile races in the Dominion onlv two months after his initial success. Last season Soneri won the

Winter Cup less than a month after her first success in open company, but she had previously won her way out of hacks. I Beat Golden Souvenir Twice. As a three-vear-old, Pensacola beat Golden Souvenir by half a head in the New Zealand Derby, and a week later won the Canterbury Cup. During the same season Pensacola won the Novice Stakes at Ashburton and the Templeton Handicap at Riccarton, He "’ afi placed in five other races as a three-year-old, and did not win again until the Wellington meeting in October. 1945, when,, as a four-year-old, he again beat Golden Souvenir at weiglit-for-age in tile Harcourt Stakes, bis last success before returning to the winning list at Ashburton. During the period lie failed to win,'Pensacola was troubled with unsoundness, and was trained at Riverton for about four mouths, before rejoining !R. Wilson’s stable after the Dunedin winter meeting. One Honour Still Remaining. The English champion jockey, Gordon Richards, overran Fred Archer’s figures of 2,748 winners some years ago, but it was only a month or so back that he topped Sam Heaphy’s aggregate of 6,260 winners in a long career on the Continent. Heaphy, who was still riding in Belgium in 19*14 at the age of G2. was a nephew of Tom and Sam Loates, two famous old-time English jockeys, and he had some 50 years in the saddle. The only honour still remaining for Gordon Richards to achieve is to win the Derby. He held high hopes of Tudor Minstrel carrying off the classic this month, but once again he was fated to suffer disappointment.
