PIONEERS’ FORESIGHT IN SETTING ASIDE CHURCH FUNDS PRAISED
The importance of the Synod trust funds to Presbyterian congregations throughout Otago and Southland was stressed by the convener of the Memo-, rial Appeal Committee, Mr Thomas Somerville, at the meeting of the Centennial Commitee of the Synod of Otago’and Southland yesterday. • > If the - congregations realised the value of the funds, he said, they would become enthusiastic about the centennial memorial appeal as being an ideal wav of expressing their indebtedness to “the pioneer settlers. To build a new Theological Hall where the Presbvterian ministers of the future would he trained seemed to him to be a most fitting' recognition of the religious ideals of the pioneers.' and of their foresight in- making provision for the future of the Church. The Synod trust funds developed from the early .trust deed’s of the settlement, which levied one-eighth the purchase price of land, the money set aside being used for religious and*educational purposes.
