NATIONALISATION OF STEEL INDUSTRY IN AUSTRALIA PREDICTED

(Rec. 8 a.m.) CANBERRA, May 16. The Government will probably nationalise toe Australian steel industry when the time is opportune, said the Minister of Supply and Shipping, Senator W. P. Ashley, in the Senate today. He promised Senator O’Flaherty that in view of the shortage of steel and steel products he would discuss with Mr Cnifley a proposal that the State and Commonwealth Governments should take over immediately to ensure sufficient supplies of steel for Australian needs. “ But I don’t view hopefully the prospect that toe Government will adopt it,” ho added. Senator O’Flaherty stated that the shortage of steel, especially at Newcastle, was due not to lack of coal, but to price control.
