TEACHERS’ SALARIES

BONUS FOR HIGH QUALIFICATIONS ADVOCATED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 16. A salary bonus for teachers with higher academic qualifications was advocated at a meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institute, which has concluded it annual conference. Delegates expressed the view that professional qualifications were necessary to support the demands for professional pay. , and encouragement would be given to the desire to raise the standard of teaching. Tlie proposals were opposed by some delegates on tho grounds that they were inconsistent with other recoin*mendations of equal pay for equal work. It was pointed out that encouragement was practically limited to young people entering the profession. A Southland remit that a bonus .should be incorporated in. the new salary scheme for those with certificates higher than “ C,” to be retrospective to April, 1946, and payable until the retirement of tile recipient, was adopted. Another remit adopted waß for a compulsory retiring age of 65 for men and 55 for women, with an age limit of 60 where male teachers had completed 40 years’ service. A provision was included for dealing with cases of hardship. The following officers were elected:, —President, Mr G. Mitchell (Canterbury); vice-presidents, Messrs TV. J. Cartwright (Canterbury) and J. S. H. Robertson (Wanganui); treasurer, Mr M. C. Fitkowsky (Wellington); executive—Messrs J. Box (Auckland). S. Dunn (Waikato), N. Gilchrist (Wellington); A.
