JAPAN PLEDGED TO PRINCIPLES OF NEW CONSTITUTION

TO&IO, May 3. A steady downpour of rain dampened the Constitution ceremony at Tokio this morning, but a sizeable crowd flocked to the Imperial Plaza, where the Eriiperor attended a programme arranged by members of the Government and heard the Premier, Mr Yoshida, call on the people to make all-out efforts for the realisation of the ideals of the Constitution. The newly-restored Japanese national flags hung limply on nearby Government offices. “A new Japan is born,” said Mr Yoshida in a statement. “We should devote ceaseless efforts to cherish this Constitution and attain its lofty ideals. If the spirit of the Constitution permeates'the national life, Japan before Jong will recover as a happy, peaceful nation and ultimately will contribute greatly to the advancement of manGeneral MacArtlmr and 400 Allied officials have been invited to a programme of classical dances and orchestral music at the Imperial Theatre this afternoon, to be followed in the evening by a fireworks display.
