Ho is a chestnut gelding by Nizami from Dignified, and cost 750 guineas- at-the yearling sales. Interesting Entrant. ' " An interesting entrant for the. Great Northern Hurdles is the Awa-puni-trained horse, Broiefield, who has performed with distinction in middleW distance handicaps this season. Broiefield has yet to'make his debut as a hurdler, but he has been hunted, and it is understood he shows definite aptitude in this department. If he is to contest tlie Great Northern he will probably be raced over hurdles at smaller meetings this month, when a i Tine on his relative prospects, should be afforded. Starting Stalls for Australian Courses. According to latest ! reports starting stalls will shortly be introduced at Caulfield and are also' likely to be installed sooli"at Flemingtorl, Members, of tijief- Vidf6M ? Moonee Valley, another Melbourne Club; intends to introduce the American portable-bar-rier shortly, v /- . , Beau Cheval Doing Well. Tile former New Zealand horse. Beau .Choral, is favourite for the Adelaide Cup to be ; rim on May 14. He has been elevated to this * position as a result 1 of his impressive - win ..in.* the Aiiz'ac Handicap at a charity meeting on April 28 wheii carrying 9.6 121 b more than his weight in the Cup.: After running third in the Adelaide ■ ■ Cup and winning the Birthday Cup last . • season lie was sent to the stud. Beau Cheval his been, racing so. well of late that lie, is being discussed as a likely contender for the Caulfield and Mel-bourne-Cups in the spring.. By Beau Rere from; the champion mare, Cuddle, ■ he is certainly well enough bred to win ■: .'anything.'

Foxbridge Leading Sire Again. Foxbridge will again be leading sire for the Dominion this season. His progeny have won well over double the amount credited to any other sire, and up to April 8 his total is £71,254 10s, which is £9,143 more than the record sum his progeny won last year. Next to him on the winning list are the • defunct sires Salmagundi and Lang Bian with £28,543 10s and £23,900 respectively. Broiefort (£21,690) and Bulandshar (£21,088) are slightly ahead of the promising young sire Defaulter, who, with £19,093, is the leading colonial-bred horse. Royal Chief and Beau llepaire are also improving their positions on the ladder and' both have produced winners of over £II,OOO. Successful Trainer Retiring.

After being associated with racing for about half a century, H. A. Te° ford, a successful trainer in New Zealand for many years, is retiring, and has asked Ins patrons, Messrs r'. Louis and ’A. id. i’reston, jun., to make other arrangements for tlie training of their horses. A prominent rider in his younger days, he has met with much success in the training branch of the sport over a long period, and/ for about 25 years has been quartered at Trentham. One of the beef horses to receive its training in the Telford stable was Beauliyre. who was given his early racing from that establishment. Other good winners have been Enrich, who won tlie Stewards’ and New-Zealand Derby, and Globe Trotter. More recently Telford has had most success with horses owned by Mr Louis, which include Master Dash, Master Robin, Caithness. Blue Bonny, Fellowship, and Ultimate.

Good Hurdle Prospect. Amorlad, who won his first hurdle race at Invercargill last Saturday, should be capable of winning several more races in his new role during the winter. He has taken time to make good, but he is now in the fortunate position of being an experienced! hurdler and still well down in the weights for a horse of his class. Many good class, handicap horses are not seen to . advantage over the fences because by the time they have gained sufficient experience to tackle an important hurdle race they are at the top of, the handicap as a result of earlier wins. Such is not the case witli Amorlad. who has been schooled and raced over hurdles for nearly 12 months. Repeated failures over the battens have resulted in his coming' down in the weights, and when he won last Saturday he carried only 9.11. As he is good in heavy going the winter tracks will not trouble him, and by the time the major jumping, events come up for decision he should be at his best if he is given another race or two in the meantime. Winterset's Rating. The Australian steeplechaser, Winterset, has been handicapped at 12.6 in the Waikato Steeples, to be run at To Rapa on May 10. The maximum weight for the race is. 12.7. He was the leading cross-country performer in Victoria till he became troublesome at the barrier, and as a result his entry was refused. Most of his form was shown over distances up to three ipilesj which probably for his absence from ”ie - Great Northern Steeplechase to . be. run at E'.lerslie next month. Cai’rymg 12.13, Winterset won the Wyuna’Steeplechase, two miles -and 1 ' at Caulfield; the Great Western Steeplechase, three miles, at Onkaparinga, South Australia, with 12,10; and the Hopetown Steeplechase, two miles and a-half, at ilemington, with 13.0 V beating Tente, 9.10, who went on to win the Australian • Steeplechase. Winterset, who'won a host of other races, had his last start in Australia when lie carried 12.13 and ran unplaced in the Downer Steeplechase of two and a-half miles, at Adelaide. Brookby Song, the winner of the Waikato Steeplechase last year, who., is probably thebest of the jumpers in the north, ha 6 received 11.8 for the event this month. He carried 9.L last year. Golden Souvenir’s Form in Australia. Racing meu here do not agree with cabled reports to New Zealand, that Golden Souvenir’s form at the A.J.C. carnival was bad, says an Australian writer. They point out that the halfbrother to Kindergarten finished close up behind the minor iplace-getters in the Sydney Cup,-defeating Russia at .level weights by several lengths. In the A.J.C. Plate, over tivo and aquarter miles, it took Russia, a Melbourne Clip winner, and Proctor, this. year’s Sydney Cnp victor, to down Golden Souvenir. Said a prominent trainer: “Golden Souvenir certainly finished’ four lengths behind Russia and Proctor in the A.J.C. Plate, but when Phar Lap won this race in only two seconds faster time lie defeated Nightraarch by about half a furlong.” The Lang Bian stallion is the only New Zealand ho.se of his shipment to show- any form in Sydney after a rough crossin" on the Tasman. -He must be given a stayer’s chance in the 'Brisbane Cup, but his task will not be easy. Russia, with 9.9, will be a big danger if he makes the trij> to Queensland. He won races in Brisbane last August with 9.8 and 10.3 and subsequently won the Melbourne Cup carrying 9.0.
