MORNING TREMORS ROUSE SLEEPERS
(P.A.) WANGANUI, April 29. A prolonged series of earth tremors were recorded at Wanganui before dawn to-day, at least two being sufficiently heavy to arouse sleepers. These were at about 2.50 and 5.30 a.m. The earlier ’quak<j was the most violent Mount Ruapehu has entered a new phase of violent but restricted activity in the past few' days, and reports from Ohakune say that a crater explosion yesterday morning sent a column of smoke 10.000 ft, just slightly short of the estimated altitude of- the column sent up on Sunday. Trampers report that fresh rocks have been thrown on to the snow from the vent, which is continually obscured by the steam and smoke.
