SEASON OPENED WIN FOR NEW TEAM Hie first'and second grade Association football competitions opened on Saturday in good conditions, and most, teams displayed comparatively good form. .-The attendances at the games ■wore , large for the first of -the season, and the play was entertaining.. Most of the clubs were, experimenting,; and as a result, better combinations will be in tbe field later in the season. The beet game of the series was the exciting encounter fought between Green Island and High School Old Boys on the Oval. Old Boys were-early on the attack. Ryan opened the scoring) with a low drive, and Clark placed another in the net shortly afterwards.: The Green Island men were gradually settling down to each others pipy, Chirr and Pearce being strong m defence. A strong attack, on the left enabled Burt to score. This success gave .Green Island more- confidence, and Burt added another two goals during the second spell. Old Boys tried desperately to ( even .the score, but a stubborn defence: kept, them from registering. The final score was: Green Island 3, Old Boys 2.. Mr Dodds was .the x*-. feree.- ■-•■u /;■ /■■■.' The pace was fast from\ the -outset, and while Varsity -rounded- off nearly every • combined movement by finding the net, the Hill team .-failed to goal in several attempts. It was obvious from the start that Northern were too strong in the forwards and backs for their much younger, opponents, who never- , theless fought back gamely. With more experience 'in front of the goal Maori Hill would have scored, as: overeagerness spoiled many opportunities.
