HIGHEST OF TWENTY COUNTRIES
BIRTH RATE IN PALESTINE NEW YORK, April 1. The United Nations Statistical Office reveals that the highest 1945 birth rate of 20 countries included in its survey was Palestine, with 417 per 1,000. The birth Tate since 1937 has risen sharply in 16 of the countries, but India and Egypt show a noticeable decline. The death rates did not change appreciably. The survey shows that Italian prices in February, 1947, were 3.000 per cent, of the pre-war levels. Other increases were :—France. 700 per cent.; Bulgaria and Finland, GOO per cent. ; India, lieland, and Egypt, between 100 and 200 per cent.; the United States and the United Kingdom, 80 per cent.; Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa, between 40 and 60 per cent.
