TOPICS FOR WOMEN

The monthly meeting oi' the council of the Dunedin Free Kindergarten Association, hold on Monday, was attended by Airs Dora Smeaton, in the chair, Lady Sidey and Mesdames A. X. Maggitt, C. V. Smith, J. M. Paterson, Miss N. Alexander, Mesdames F. Barr, E. F. D’Ath, J. R. Glendining, J. Galloway, E. 1. Halsted, iR. Hudson, J. A. Jenkins, L. Ld. W. Jones, M. Myers, C. (). Mathias, S. G. Secular, J. O. Shand, W. B. Taverner. Representatives of local committees who attended were Mesdames J. A. R. Brown, W. Garrett, C. Greig, A. S. McCrostic, S. Fraser, and M. James. The principal, Aliss E. S. Hamilton, reported that on account of the fine weather average attendances had been satisfactory. Recent staff appointments were Miss Margaret Just and Miss Phyllis Varcoe to the positions of directors of the (Rachael Reynolds and St. Kilda Kindergartens respectively. It was also reported that at a meeting of the joint committee of the Flunked Society and Kindergarten Association the urgent question of a new building for the pre-school educational centre had been discussed. Airs Alan Gray has left for a short holiday at Christchurch. Airs Raymond Kirk is visiting Christchurch for the Easter holidays. Aliss Jmelda Young, of Christchurch, has arrived' to spend the Easter holidays with Airs Al. 'E. Holland, Roslyn. Airs B. Jacobs will arrive to-day from Palmerston North to stay with Airs Richard Hudson, of (Royal Terrace. Alesdames Jeffrey (Barnett, David Smith, and J. N. Alurdodk will spend the Easter vacation at Warrington.’ The sum of £lls was realised by the display of a floral carpet in Invercargill recently. The carpet was made by a committee representing foqr organisations—the Invercargill Horticultural Society, the Women’s Division of the Federated Farmers, the Women’s Institute, and tlie Southland Women’s Club. The sum will benefit the Barnardo Homes in England.

h;ul been leased in the Security (Buildings, Stuart street. Miss M. Preshaw, principal of the pre-school educational centre, reported that the average number of Plunket nurses, Karitane trainees, and kindergarten students observing at the centre was five per day. The annual meeting of the centre had taken place on March 19, when Miss E. S. Hamilton had spoken on her impressions of pre-school work in Australia, Nominations for office-bearers and for members of the council were received for the ensuing year. Satisfaction was expressed at the result of the money-raising efforts undertaken by the council during the month of March, the total amount to hand being £4OO. A vote of appreciation was passed to Mesdames C. V. Smith, J. M. Paterson, and A. S. McCrostie for their valuable assistance in this connection. Mrs Smeaton referred to the successful function in aid of kindergarten funds held at the residence of Lady Sidey last Saturday night, and conveyed to Lady Sidey the council’s gratitude for placing her home at the disposal of the committee. Accounts amounting to £550 Is were passed for payment.

Mr and Mrs Graham Rutherford (St. Glair) will spend Easter at Wanaka. Mrs Garth Gallaway, of High street, will spend Easter at Wanaka. Miss Meg Saunders, M.8.E., well known during the war years for her service under Miss Jean Begg in the formation of Y.W.C.A. clubs in the. Middle East, and particularly at Malta, has been appointed' general secretary for the Y.W.C.A. in India. Miss V. Cable, who for the past seven years has been infant mistress at the Port Chalmers School, and who has now retired from the teaching profession, was entertained at a function held at school. Wishing her a long and happy retirement, Douglas Little, the school captain, presented Miss Cable, on behalf of the school children. with an afternoon tea set. Miss Cable said that she would not be severing altogether her connection with the school and the children, but would follow their future careers with the greatest interest.
