DEATH OF GREECE’S KING
POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS IN DOUBT SUCCESSOR MORE POPULAR LONDON, April 2. The Athens correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ says it was too early to judge the political implications of the death of King George 11. of Greece. It is possible that the monarchy will be strengthened, ( because the blame for General Metaxas’s dictatorship, which was laid on King George, cannot touch King Paul, and it is widely recognised' that both King Paul and Queen Frederika made every effort in exile and since their return to fulfil their royal duties. Their personalities are much more pleasing to the Greeks, and the fact that they brought up their children, Princesses Irene and Sophie, and the new Crown Prince, Constantine, to regard themselves as wholly Greek, and to forget their ancestry, has brought them personal popularity. On the other hand, King George’s death must inevitably disturb the already unsettled conditions, and the Communists may take the occasion to raise afresh the question of the monarchy, though by the Constitution the succession is automatic.-
