ADMISSIONS DOUBLED
dental school acceptances SPECIAL EFFORT FOR EX-SERVICEMEN All ex-servicemeri applicants who qualified for admission to the Dental School of the University of Otago have been accepted for firstyear classes, making a total enrolment of 60 against the 1946 figure of 28. All candidates who passed the ordinary examination for admission, including civilians and ex-servicemen, have been accepted, as well as the ex-servicemn. applicants who qualifid at the special tests. “ We are making a special effort this year, taking 60 students in a school built to take 20, largely because of the returned servicemen,” said Dr J. P. Walsh, director of the Dental School, this morning. “ The main worry confronting the staff is that it might not be possible to fulfil their obligations as teachers. “ The accommodation problem will increase as the students progress, ocnpriallv by the time the third and fourth years are reached,” added Dr Walsh. It was possible that by then, however, increased accommodation might be available.- “Despite the increasing urgency of our accommodation troubles, 'the alternative was to exclude the ex-servicemen applicants, and we ,felt- that they deserved special consideration.”
