HISTORIC CRICKET CLUB
NEW ZEALANDERS ELECTED OFFICIALS (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.! (Rec. 8 a.m.) LONDON, Mar. 5. The East Molesey Cricket Club, which owns a ground where cricket has been played for two and a-half centuries, for the fix-st time in its long history has elected New Zealanders as its president and secretary. They are Mr B. M. Turner and his son Monty, who formerly played for the .Waitaki Boys’ High School’s first eleven. The ground, which had been in the possession of the trustees of a Kent family for many years, was purchased by public subscription during the war, when the New Zealand Government and a number of New Zealanders and New Zealand sporting bodies contributed. It contains a memorial to the late Mr F. E. Smith, of the Carisbrook Club, Dunedin, who was killed at El Alamein, and who made an average of 1,000 runs and took 200 • wickets playing at East Molesey during the 1936, 1937, and 1938 seasons. Dr W. G. Grace played regularly at East Molesey, and Walter Robbins learned his early cricket there. The club’s annual 10-day festival is one of the holiday events of the Southern England cricket season.
