SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL MEETING

POPULAR COUNTRY FIXTURE The seventy-fifth annual meeting of the Cromwell Jockey Club will open on Friday, and with good fields carded the meeting, promises to be a highly successful one. The club is one of the oldest and the most popular in the Dominion, and those who decided to make the trip from the city are not likely to be disappointed. The following are the fields, , and on the single pool totalisator the horses •elected may return dividends :

12.30: Goldfields High-weight, £llO. lm.—Detain 9.13, Gnohill 9.10, Percy, Winning Cheer 9.1, Banco, Kassai, Ara Chief, Profiteer, Count Roger 9.0.

Detain and Gnohill have no recent form, and the winner may come from those at the bottom of the handicap. Of this division Percy appeals most as a likely improver. Winning Cheer has, at times, shown promise, and she may prove next best. The two selected are:—

Percy. Winning Cheer.

: I.loc Upper Clutha Trot, £llO. Class 3.37. ljm.—All Clear, Arawa Lad, Blind Fury, . Interlace, Minstrel Hall, Pardon (T.), Prairie Jack, Recast, Rosalind Hall, Shiftman, Sir Hall, St. Phils, Tayside;- Teviot* Maid, Victory Dale scr, Desert Calumet, Grattan Lee 48yds. . * , Arawa Lad and Blind Fury are not without prospects, while Minstrel Light was a: good fourth last Saturday. ,St. Phils has the ability to win in this 'company, and, Grattan Lee should not find his handicap beyond, him. Sir Hall would be better suited in the saddle event later in the day. Those fancied axe:—

Blind Fury, St. Phils.

1.50- Trial Handicap, £IOO. 6f.— Robot 8.11, First Out 8.10,; Sandy’s Pride, Too-Hoo, White Face, Cover Drive, Wood Pit, Cold Feet, Minstrel Light, -Marie Rita, Agility?' Incitatus, Count Roger, Clara’s Night, Lady*Hotspur, Welcome Light, Great Chase, French Glider 8.8.

Robot’s third placing at Wingatiii last Saturday will bring him support in this company. First Out is the only other horse with any form this season) Of the remainder Marie Rita, Incitatus, Clara’s Night, Lady Hotspur, and Welcome iight have all shown speed in races, and may be capable of reaching a place. The favourites may, be:Robot. . Welcome Light. '

2.30: Cromwell Handicap, £l5O. lm. —Gold Lance 8.4, Salad 8.0, Black Light 7.11, Sailor’s Pal 7.9, Gnohill 7.0.

There .does not appear to .be much between any of the five acceptors, and they should provide an interesting race, »^Gold/Lafice and Salad have both raced well in, Tecent' months, while Black Light would be dangerous if she is at her best. Sailor’s Pal should be suited by this distance. Form horses are:— .

.Salad., Gold Lance

3.10: Mount ‘ Pisa Hack Handicap, £llO. <i7f.“Gold ;Spur 9,0, Silverstream 8.12, «o»'-iigntr8.7f Banco 7.10, Regatta, Robot, White Face,. Marie Rita rtWW "j 'Gold Spur and Sflyerstream are both very speedy hacks! v who always race well on tlie country: circuit, i Soft Light was a very easy, winner at Omaliau/ and sure to' be! in keen demand. -Regatta and Robot have the best credentials of the remainder." The winner may cofflO from : Soft Light. Silverstream.

. 8.50: Awarau Handicap Trot, £llo.’ Class 2.59. ljm.—Arawa Lad, ArrowTop, Blind Fury, Duncraig, Lucky Dale, Minstrel Hall, Prairie Jack, Recast, .Sir Hall, Tough Guy, Victory Dale scr, Desert Calumet, Grattan Lee 36yds, Ben Wyvis 84. The field is; much the same as for the trot earlier in-the day, except that this event will be run in saddle over a shorter distance. Sir Hall will be well suited" under those conditions, while Arrow Top should add interest. At this stage the 'most popular fancies are:“.

Sir Hall. Grattan Lee.

4.30: Lowhurn-Hack Handicap, £l2O. Im.—Red Prize 9.0, Detain 8.3, Silverstream 8.0, Winning; Cheer, Percy; 7.5, First Out, Ara Chief, Banco, Robot, White Face, King’s .Victory, Count Roger j' Amicus, Kassai 7.0.

Red Prize’s recent form points to lum having good prospects in this field, although it is 18 months since he won •a race. King’s Victory finished strongly for second at Wingatui in a novice race. Several of the remainder are engaged earlier in the day, and their form in the earlier events should prove a valuable guide. The two selected are : Red Prize. King’s Victory.
