TRELOAR BEATS CAMPBELL

RECORD TIME IN SPRINT FURTHER SUCCESS IN 220 (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 17. After'several days’ very heavy rain, the weather cleared at noon to-day and Lancaster Park was in good order for the special meeting at which the American athletes, Al Hersliey, Don Campbell, and John Fulton, and the Australian, John Treloar, competed. The track did not appear to be fast, and a sensation was caused when a 9 3-ssec record for New Zealand was announced for thfe 100yds. Treloar, Campbell, and Batten (Christchurch) started off scratch. At 50 yards the three were in line, but in the last 20 yards Treloar shot away from Campbell and won by li yards, with Batten only a yard away third. Taking the time as correct, all three broke- evens.

There was a light south-west wind to assist the runuers in the 220yds. Campbell led until just near the post, when Treloar finished well to win by inches in 21 4-ssec, only l-ssec outside the New Zealand record on a circular track, made by Bainbridgc (Auckland) in 1935. After an excellent race in the 440 yds, Fulton (scr) just beat Plunkett, Ashburton (10yds), ip 49 2-ssec. Hersliey, on a ground that did not give him a proper foothold, put the shot 51ft 7iin and threw the discus 156 ft 2iin, easily beating the New Zealand record of 144 ft 2-iin.
