PORT CHALMERS AFFAIRS
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING
“Taking into consideration the weather of the last few years, it appears that our summer starts just before the school holidays' end,” said the Mayor, Mr H. S. Watson, at the monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council held last night. - He moved that it be suggested to the Member of Parliamentyfor the electorate that a move could, with advantage, be made to postpone the holiday period for two or three weeks. The motion was carried.
In commenting on a letter received from the Department of Internal Affairs concerning the Government’s offer to subsidise certain types of war memorials, the Mayor said that a public meeting was to be called to discuss the matter of a memorial, but that it seemed to him that something less costly than a community centre might be more fitting. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the council next Monday! night and to invite to it Mr A. MorrieTaylor, gas engineer, to discuss with the council his statement of the costs of plant for the borough’s gasworks. The Mayor gave a report of his interview with the Executive Committee «. the Otago Centennial Association. He said that as far as centennial celebrations were concerned, Port Chalmers and Dunedin were one, but that a centennial history of the district was important and should be the first_ tiling dealt with. It was very gratifying to hear Mr L. R. McColvin, City of Westminster librarian, say that the book stock of the Port Chalmers Library compared more than favourably with those of libraries of other towns u. similar size, particularly in the children’s section, said the Mayor in speaking of the library report. Those present at the meeting were the Mayor, Mr H. S. Watson, and Crs C. O. Knewstubb, W. Crawford. J. T Knewstubb, W. D. Campbell, H. 'Williamson, and J. Matthews.
