OTAGO ATHLETIC TITLES

FIRST-CLASS PERFORMANCES FAST TIMES DESPITE CONDITIONS NELSON AND HYSLOP OUTSTANDING The combination of a spongy turf, eoft, ened by rain, and a cold, driving wind 'made it inevitable that there would not be any new records established at the Otago ’amateur athletic championships on Saturday afternoon. Nevertheless; despite these handicaps, it was a, commentary on the present high standard of athletics in the province that the performances were first class. Had the Otago Centre been favoured :with .the fine weather of the previous Saturday there would undoubtedly have , been- new records set. Actually, in one event, the 100 yards, the versatile'Leith runner, S. R; Dawson, covered the distance in his heat and in the final in lOsec, equalling the record established in 1929, by the Invercargill performer, B. Geddes. Dawson, however, was pushed along by the strong wind, and it is not expected ..that his time will be officially recognised. Had the weather been fine there would have been a large attendance at the Caledonian Ground, for it was clear that the appearance the previous week of the American athletes had stimulated public interest in the sport. As it was, the rare appearance of the sun later in the afternoon probably tempted out some enthusiasts, and after 2 p.m. there was an attendance of about 300.

. The meeting was given added interest through, the presence of several Invercargill contenders for championship honours, and. A. Ogilvie was outstanding. Like Dawson, who was the most prominent athlete at the meeting, Ogilvie covered the 100 yards in lOsec. The final produced an exciting finish and Dawson just got home first. The most exciting event was the 220 yards. Here again ? the Invercargill runner was pitted against Dawson, and the result was in doubt right until the tape was reached. As in the 100 yards, Dawson’s determination carried him through. The Leith representative also won the long jump event. FAST MILE. Whenever W. H. Nelson (Civil Service) and W. N. Burrows (Mornington) meet there is usually a keen struggle for the honours. The Mornington Tunner had to concede his title to Nelson, who judged the mile very intelligently, allowing Burrows to act as pacemaker for most of the way. Rounding the bend he sprinted away and won easily. Under the circumstances, the time of 4min 22 3-sseo reflected a fast race, and new figures may have been established had the conditions been more favourable. EXCITING THREE-MILE. The three-mile race was also won by Nelson, the Civil Service man, and it resolved itself into a duel between J.

it. Hubber, of Invercargill, M. D. Gillick, also of Invercargill, and Nelson.. At one stage, early in the race, Nelson attempted to leave the remainedr of the field behind, but Hubber stayed with him. Nelson made another attempt to go out well in front' with three laps to go after Hubber had led at . the _ end of the two-mile mark. This time he was successful and be won by 20yds. Again he ran with mature judgment and with Hubber (who gave a determined performance) he came in for a prolonged ovation. Nelson is at present at.the peak of his form, which should show out at the national meeting. As was expected, J. R. Hyslop (Anglican) had no difficulty in retaining his one-mile and three-mile walk

titles. He is also a strong contender for national honours. Hyslop is the best walker since Cabot’s day. The List Shield for the club obtaining the most points at the meeting was won by Otago University (17J), followed by Anglican (16). and North Otago and .Civil Service (12 each). The results were as follows, the competing clubs and the abbreviations used being:—Alexandra A.A.C. (Alex.), Anglican H. and A.A.C. (Ang.), Balclutha A.A.C. (Bal.), Baptist H. and A.A.C.
