BOLD ELIMINATES MAYSON MISS KERR’S SUCCESS WOMEN'S DOUBLES CHAMPIONS DEFEATED (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 7. 0. M. Bold (Hutt Valley) eliminated yet another New Zealand-ranked player when the New Zealand lawn tennis championships reached the quarter-final stage at Wilding Park today. His third victim was J. T. Mayson (Auckland), ranked ninth in the Dominion last season, but not seeded in this tournament. It was a long five-set match, very, similar to the match in which iMayson beat Bold in the New Zealand championships at Auckland last year. The most interesting result of the day, although it was not entirely unexpected, was the defeat 6f the women’s doubles champions, Mesdames J. Graham (Hutt Valley) and J. McVay (Wellington) by Mesdames J. Robb (Hutt Valley) and K. Hart (Canterbury).. The champions had not shown impressive form in the Canterbury tournament which preceded the New Zealand championships, but they fought courageously, and in the end were little unlucky to lose, holding four match points in the final set To-day’s play again provided some magnificent matches, although, as on Monday, the courts had' been made slow and occasionally, treacherous by heavy overnight rain. The best games in the men’s singles l , were undoubtedly those in which N. V. Edwards (Hutt Valley) beat !R. G. Pattinson (Canterbury) and S. Painter (Wellington) beat J. A. Barry (Auckland). Edwards and Pattinson kept up a lively pace through five hard sets, and they were as evenly matched as they could be. Edwards recovered from 2-4 in the fifth set to win at 6-4. Painter was again in danger of being two sets down, the youthful Barry hitting with speed and precision to wiii the first set and lead 4-0 and 5-2 in the second, but again the Wellington man played better the further the mach went. There were no surprises in the women’s singles, in which all eight seeded players have reached the quarter-finals. Only two matches today were close, -Miss M. Burrell (Canterbury) having a great driving match with Miss M. L. Kerr (Otago) and Mrs Hart losing the first set to Miss J. McL. Wallace (Auckland) before getting into the rhythm of her accurate driving game. Results:— MEN’S SINGLES. Holder: R. S. McKenzie (Hutt Valley). 1 Third Round. R. S. McKenzie (Hutt Valley) beat D. F.
