NAVAL RECRUITS UNIMPRESSIVE (Rec 8 a.m.) LONDON, January 7< Admiral Sir Geoffrey Layton. Com-mander-in-Chief, Portsmouth, who ha# been inquiring into the religious knowledge of 18 and 19-year-olds now joining the Navy, said yesterday’that only 23 per cent, could repeat the Lord # Prayer word perfectly, 20 per cent, were partly correct, and 40 per cent, could give only the opening . words. Seventy per cent, knew who Christ was, but only 20 per cent could say where Christ was born. Only 40 per cent, knew the significance of Easter and 25 per cent, of Whitsun.
