PREPARATION FOR INDEPENDENCE
NEW PHASE IN BURMA TROUBLE CIVIL WAR THREAT (Rec. 2 p.m.) LONDON, January 7. The Burmese have begun a nationwide “ independence campaign,” reports Reuter’s Rangoon correspondent. Aung San’s Anti-Fascist Freedom League -stated that the campaign vvas to prepare the nation for the coming struggle for freedom. ; The campaign was primarily aimed to strengthen the “ Peoples’ Volunteer Corps,” which everywhere was reported to I© drilling and training, and whose members were mainly former members of the pro-Japanese Burma Defence Party. Its strength is officially estimated to be 30,000, but is probably at least 60,000.
