TRENTHAM MEETING

STRONG SOUTHERN TEAM LIKELY STAKE EARNERS (Special.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 7. The Mosgiel trainer, D. P. Wilson, was at Ricearton yesterday with Patinos, Grill and Frances. He went on to Wellington last evening. Patinos and Grill won a race eacli over the holidays, and Frances was third in her only race. The trio will no doubt carry strong southern support at Trentham. . L. J. Ellis left for Wellington yesterday with Golden Souvenir and Bruce. The former is not engaged on Saturday and his first race at the meeting will'bo in the Wellington Cup. Present intentions are to start Bruce also in the Cup and, if so, Ellis will not be able to, ride in the race. Golden Souvenir will, no doubt, be ridden by C. T. Wilson, and a rider has yet to be secured for Bruce, Bruce is engaged in two races on Saturday next, and as lie is destined to contest the Cup he will be started in the mile and three furlong Dominion Handicap. C. McCarthy also left yesterday with Foxhaven, Indian Dawn, Battle Abbey and Helio. Foxhaven did not race well over the holidays, but has invariably fared prominently on the Trentham track, and may' once again spring a surprise. Indian Dawn is running out her hack engagements at the meeting and her prospects in the Apprentices’ Handicap on Saturday appear bright. She was ridden in her two races at Wingatui by M. McClintock, but as he now has a 71b penalty, another apprentice will have to be secured for her. Battle , Abbey is to be left at Trentham after the meeting, and will be shipped to Australia at the first opportunity. , Helio was slow away in his two races over the holidays and did not show much speed, but lie is being' given plenty of time and may not be seen to advantage until later. F. A; Roberts did not return home after the Auckland meeting and went . on to Trentham from there with Thornbridge, who will be joined, this week by Lincoln Fair, Kartikeya and Diameter. Lincoln Fair disappointed at Ricearton in November, but was off colour at the time. She has. done well since and can be expected to earn further honours on the trip. The Finis two-year-old Kartikeya had to be eased up ip the spring because of a slight ailment, but appeared to be in bright order when sprinted to-day. Others from (Ricearton racing on Saturday include Battle. Chief, Ruling Moment, Renowned, Cipher, Beautiful, Revolte, Derene, Al-Sirat, Raliine, Armont, Robingay, and Gay Joy. PROGRAMME DOUBTFUL F. D. Jones has arranged to take Leigh -Barton, Palm Bearer, Monte- ■ zuma, and Zorro north early next week, but there is some doubt regarding both Leigh Barton and Palm Bearer. The former pulled up well. after a sprint; to-day, and if he remains as sound as at present he will make the trip. Palm Bearer has not done well since she raced at Oamaru, and unless she improves in the meantime she may be missing from her second day’s engagement, the Desert Gold Stakes. Lord Elgin was not nominated for the first day at Trentham, and his, first race will be in the Anniversary Handicap on.the second day, while his only other race at the meeting will be in the Thorndon Handicap on the fourth day, both races run over a mile. Lord Elgin was taken north to-day by G. Ridgway in company with Robiugay and Beautiful, whose recent efforts give them somo chance of collecting stake money on the trip. The disappointing Peculate was also taken north by Ridgway.

Privilege is to go to Wellington tonight, and will have her fist race in tlio Desert Gold Stakes on* the second day. She raced disappointingly at the New Zealand Cup and has not been paraded since, so she may be at a disadvantage in her opening engagement. She will be accompanied by the Auckland-owned Gay Joy, who, is in the Halswell Hack Handicap on Saturday. She has not. fulfilled expectations in the South Island and is to be offered for sale during the meeting. Tomahawk was accepted for in the concluding event at Trenthara next Saturday but will not be on hand be-' cause of a foot injury. His trainer, F. Holnies, has hopes of taking the gelding up for later engagements. Royal Tan and Sea Flower will go north to-morrow in charge of C. ,6. Humphries, and they will race on . the second day Both snaped well enough at Wingatui to suggest their prospects at the meeting. Sea Flower has developed well since she commenced racing, and is now a. solidly-built filly likely to carry on as a winner. She will be again ridden by L. J. Ellis. Lord Advocate was booked for a trip to Trentham, but is on the easy list again. He-was taken to the West Coast, but was unable to race because of injuring a knee on the trip over. His stable mate, Bittersweet, is to return to the Coast for the Reefton meeting next Saturday!, Her win at Hokitika put her out of hacks, but she will be able to compete in the class'on Saturday.
