ENGLAND DID WELL
WASHBROOK, YARDLEY, AND WEATHER SAVE THE DAY HIGH PRAISE FOR BEDSER (By W. J. O’lßeilly, N.Z.P.A. Special. Correspondent.) (Rec. 8.50 a.m.) MELBOURNE, January 7. England did well to save the game. When two wickets fell quickly after lunch. Australia seemed to have a great chance of victory. But Hammond, Yardley, and Bedser, aided and abetted by light showers of rain, saw the day through, and gave England the opportunity of retrieving a cricket reputation which had been sullied somewhat in the two previous tests. * Late in the afternoon rain drove the players from the ground on several occasions.
