THE RAILWAYS STRIKE
MAXIMUM PENALTIES FOR INSTIGATORS (Rec. 11.15 a.m.) PERTH, Nov. 22. The maximum penalties pro. vided for instigating a strike were imposed by the Arbitration Court on the Locomotive Drivers, Fire- •. men, and Cleaners’ Union and on 22 members. The union was fined £IOO, and the members £lO each. Under a section of the Arbitration Act it was possible for an order to be obtained against member of an organisation engaged in a strike or lockout, and in the event of such order of the court being contravened 1 ) the Act provided a penalty of £IOO. Processes under this section were being prepared, said the Industrial Registrar, who added that the serious consequences which were capable of arising under this section were not generally appreciated by employers or workers.
