FRIDAY, NOVEMBER '22. (Before Mr J. D.'Willis, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. John Fran'cis Mac Neil, a labourer, was fined 10s on a charge of drunkenness. GRAVE CHARGES. Horace, Seymore Sparrow, aged 32, described as conducting a motor driving school, was charged with taking an unmarried girl under the age of 18 years (her actual age being 1G years 10 months) out of possession of her father, a resident of Dunedin, with intent that the girl concerned should be unlawfully and carnally known by the accused. The offence was alleged to have taken place on November 19. The accused was further charged with wilfully making a false declaration at Christchurch, by falsely representing that a bride wqs 21 years of age, for the purpose of procuring a marriage certificate. • Chief-detective T. Y. Hall said that the accused' had ’been drrested in Christchurch and was remanded to appear in Dunedin. Sparrow, who: was represented by Mr F. M. Hazel Ilelva Kay, aged 18, a typist, who was represented by Mr B. S. Irwin, and Coral Elizabeth McLauchlaiv a typist, aged 20, for whom Mr C, H. On the appli-ation of Chief-detective Hall, who said that both accused had been arrested last night, it being alleged that they had been involved m shoplifting. Counsel applied for the suppression of the names of the accused, but the Magistrate refused the requests on the grounds that the thefts had been admitted. BORSTAL ESCAPEE REMANDED. Robert Jens Thorne, an escapee from the Borstal Institution at Invercargill, was charged with the theft at Balclutlia on November 12 of an. overcoat and hat, valued at £ll 155,, tlie property of Sydney Archibald Rogers. The accused was remanded until December 5 in custody. The chiefdetective said that since his escape it was alleged that Thorne had committed 10 offences, one of them being of an indictable nature. .....
