FISHING TAPU TO END

MAORI WOMEN EXERCISE RIGHT (P.A.) WHANGAREI, Oct. 19. A three-months tapu on the ancestral Maori fishing grounds along a 15-mile stretch of the East Coast between the northern extremity of the Bay of Islands to Flat Rock, at the southern ‘ extremity of Whangaroa Heads,, will be lifted on November 1. The tapu, which was imposed by the insistence of the old women of the coastal' hapus, upon the exercise of an inalienable right, was placed on the area as a result of unsuccessful searches for the body of a Maori fisherman drowned off Matauri Bay early in August. The tapu has been scrupulously observed by Maori and pakeha, though it meant a denial of fish, which formed the staple item of diet. The expressed intention of some pakehas to ignore the tapu was frustrated by the Marine Department prohibiting fishing for the period.
