FEDERAL COAL BILL DEFEAT
INQUIRY INTO ABSENCE’ OF LABOUR ’ MEMBERS SYDNEY, September 10. Labour Party officials have commenced an inquiry into the absence of two Labour members of the Legislative Godncil last night when tlie Government was defeated by two votes on amendments to the Coal Bill. -Both men face expulsion from the party if they fail to give satisfactory explana-* tions as to why they were not present.
One o/ the. members, was in hospital for a minor operation and the other was in Melbourne on private business: - In a final attempt to have the original proposal carried, the Government will send the amendments:back to the Legislative Council for reconsideration. It considers them totally unacceptable. The Council will probably not consider the matter until, next week- .
