GENERAL ELECTION

OPENING OF PARTY CAMPAIGNS OPPOSITION NOT CONSULTED (Special.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. The Labour Party’s election campaign is scheduled to be opened in the Auckland Town i Hall by the Prime Minister, the Right Hon. P. Fraser, on October 15. Rumours to this effect were in circulation in the lobbies of Parliament House towards the end of last week, and they have been confirmed* by the official organ of the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union. The fact that it was left to a trade union journal to make the first? announcement of the commencement of Labour’s campaign has been the subject of some criticism to-day. One of the most surprised persons tb learn the news was the Leader of the Opposition, Mr S G. Holland. In an interview to-day- he said that the announcement of the opening of Labour’s campaign by Mr Fraser at Auckland on October 15 had come as a considerable surprise to him, because Mr Fraser had given, him an undertaking that before any decision was arrived at as to the length of the campaign the Prime Minister would discuss the matter with him. Accordingly,.added Mr Holland, he bad held up his own preparations for the campaign. The announcement of the date for the opening of Labour’s campaign suggests the likelihood off the session concluding some time in the previous week, possibly on October 10 or IT.
