AN HONOURED NAME

TRIBUTES TO LATE HON F. J. ROLLESTON (Special.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. The name of Rolleston has become not only part of the life of Canterbury, but it has become part of the history \>f the Dominion,” said the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, in the Homo yesterday afternoon when paying a tribute to the memory of the late Francis Joseph Rolleston, a former member of Parliament and Minister of the Crown, whose death occurred at Timaru on Sunday. Mr Rolleston, said the Prime Minister, had carried on what was almost a family tradition of very liberal Conservatism. He had been very modern in his outlook, and although he had never wavered in allegiance to his party, his outlook had been far in advance of many of those with whom he was associated. His training m law had fitted him eminently for the positions of Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, and he had possessed a clear, logical mind, and was an incisive thinker. In Timaru, where he gave the greatest service, he would be missed most. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, said that the late Mr Rolleston belonged to one of the very best types of progressive Conservative families. Timaru was the poorer because of the loss of one of its greatest sons, and New Zealand, too, was the poorer through his passing. After several other speakers, including the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, had spoken the customary motion of sympathy was passed, and the House adjourned until 2.30 p.m. to-day as a mark of respect.
