Poor Showing. . His form at meetings . iii Canterbury during recent months was promising, and although he.stripped in good order on Saturday he . failed to repeat it. , Brilliant Jumping, : An exhibition of jumping equal to that of The Pie in the Hunt Cup on Saturday, is seldom seen at Wingatui. Although the. pony show jumper was outpaced on the flat; the. brilliant manner in 'which he took each fence was appreciated, by those present. On, passing the post he was given a reception which is seldom accorded a beaten hotse. , ' . Destruction of Boloyna. « There was. some criticism voiced at Wingatui on Saturday .in regard to the destruction of 'Boloyna after lie' •had’.broken his. leg when lie fell in the Sea View Hurdles. Mr G; Ruthven, caretaker of the course, who' generally destroys.any horses at Wingatui which receive injuries necessitating their -destruction, .pointed out to the ‘Star’ this morning that lie was not called' on to shgot Boloyna. Two Useful Efforts. Baracha, who finished second to Red Pickle, was saddled up again later in the day, and ran another creditable race to finish third in the Vauxhall , Hapdicap. In each race " lie finished •tronglv in the. straight without seriously troubling those that .finished in front of him. His. form was good enough to suggest that-he will win a distance hack race when the company is not strong! ■ Well-earned Rest. Deep Harmony, who revealed excellent forpi at (Riecarton last month, has been turned out for a spell. Last sea-; son he/started 17 times fqr two wins and five minor placings, while in his three races this season he finished first, second, and third. Deep Harmonv' is a four-year-old half-brother, bv l’haleron Bay, to Piccolo, who ' showed his first glimpse of form for several-months when he finished second to • Leigh Barton fin , the Heathcote Handicap at Riecarton on August 17. Special /Trials at Awapuni, Because of the wet weather that has § revailed for some time at Awapuni, orsesi’ trained- at that centre, very backward, and the Manawatu Racing Club has decided to sponsor a matinee meeting to help trainers in preparing, their'horses for spring racing. AL . tb'oilgh. an improvement.in track con-ditjons.-was’/reported last - week, many

horses trained there are said to be more backward at this stage of the season than they have been lor some years, particularly the two-year-olds. A programme lias been drawn up comprising a three-furlong sprint for two-year-olds, and five-furlong races for in aide ns ; hacks, and open handicap horses. ~

Game Effort. Making his first appearance in an open race, Joy Rosa registered a fine performance to dead-heat with Royal Chance in the Tally-ho. Handicap. The Salmagundi mare trailed the leaders to the straight (where Royal Chance took charge), and alter appearing to be beaten a furlong from the post, stuck to her task gamely and was catching Royal Chance with every stride. Last season Joy Rosa won once, while she has been successful at her only two starts this season, the other win being gained at Riecarton, where she was followed home by Gallimaufry, Deep Harmony, and Lord Elgin.- Like most oi Salmagundis stock, Joy Rosa is well endowed with stamina, and a good handicap may come her way this season. Overtaxed Facilities.

A tired, dusty crowd, estimated at 27,000, made the best of overtaxed facilities bn Saturday, when for the first time in five years the Avondale Jockey Club ivas. able to bring its own course into use: * For the first day of the' club’s 1946 spring meeting the strained maiiual totalisator handled 1 a record sum of £142,719, nearly two and a-half times- the amount invested on the corresponding driy in 1941.- Although - the. main totalisator was augmented bv an eight-windowed auxiliary building, constant investors saw little of the racing because of the time taken in placing i their bets. It -wastonly a fortunate'few who saw the races ire which. their money was at stake, = " ■ ' / Reliable Trotter.

Atystydale.lost a lot of.ground at,the start of the Wingatui Trot, and 'appeared to be in a hopeless position with seven furlongs to go. She gradually made up her handicap on the outside of the field and with a strong' run in the straight,; reached fourth place. She. .is one of the most • reliable j tTotters in commission, and her prospects , for- the season look bright.
