DOWNWARD TREND
NEW YORK STOCK MARKET HEAVY SELLING (Rec. 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 9. The stock market opened with a downward trend. Selling was so heavy that the ticker tape again fell behind in transactions. There was a mild recovery at midday, and the heavy selling waves slackened somewhat. However, stocks continued to slump, many issues touching their lowest for more than a year. Losses of one to eight points were common. Average .values before closing were the lowest since 1945. ' To-day’s declines in many instances were more severe than last Tuesday’s. Minus signs. showed all over the board, and in point of issues traded in the market was one of the broadest ever recorded. Some stocks lost as much as 12 points.
