BREAD GRAIN REQUIREMENTS
IMPROVED HARVEST PROSPECTS (Rec. 11 a.m.) , ■ COPENHAGEN, September 2. The food and agricultural organisation report to the Food Conference said that improved harvest prospects, notably in Southern Europe and China, had reduced the estimated gap between the world export supplies and requirements in bread grains for 194647 to about 8,000,000 tons. This improvement of 2,000,000 tons depends on the maintenance of the present flour extraction rates and controls over the collection and use of grains. Some countries were 60 short of foreign exchange that they probably could not import enough for a minimum diet. The diet for large groups of people is likely to remain at 1.500 calories or less throughout 1946-47 if special financial aid is not arranged after Unrra has closed down.
