POWER SUPPLIES FOR SHIPS
COMPANIES BUSY ON JOB (P.A.) WELLINGTON,' July 19. Every endeavour is being made by the shipping _ companies to push ahead with the reticulating of electric power for the heating and lighting of ships l while in port, according to enquiries made in Wellington to-night. Disagreement was expressed, with the Westport seamen's opinion that the equipment was 1 available to carry, out the work.' It was only recently that some second-hand material of the type necessary for the construction of transformers had been obtained, and it was by no means certain that there would be sufficient of this second-hand material to complete the necessary work. All the parties concerned in the •task of supplying light and heat—the shipping companies, harbour boards, and contractors—were doing their best to have the work completed. , The National Council of, the Seamen's Union which has been meeting in Wellington since Wednesday, has been considering: the attitude., of its members in the hold-up at the West Coast, ports. When approached 'this .afternoon, the union president, Mr P. P. Walsh, said that there was ho change' in the situation;
