PERMANENT PARKING

I ST. HILDA PROBLEM # ■ NEW BY-LAW SUGGESTED Steps to frame a by-law to prohibit parking in the Borough of St. Kilda Detween the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. -were taken at last night's meeting of the Borough Council on the" motion of <!r P. J. B. Rendel. " This is a move in the right direction," commented the /mayor (Mr N. D. Anderson), when the 'motion was unanimously approved. Other councillors present were Messrs E. Long worth, T. D. B. Roy, D. J. Simpson, J. 0. Cherry, J. H. Pearson, and D. Telfer. Complaints which had been made about trucks bavins been left parked on narrow streets had led to an investigation by the Traffic Department, but in all cases referred to by complainants it was found that the vehicles were correctly parked. Councillors discussed the problem of "permanent" parking, and several suggestions were made to deal. with the problem. Cr Longworth suggested that the borough street lights be turned off for a period of three hours some night, so that car and truck owners could be apprehended, but it was felt that in such a case convictions would not be secured in resulting prosecutions. "I feel that if a man can afford to own a car or a truck, then he should erect a garage and a crossing," said Cr Rendel, moving that a" reasonable by-law be framed to govern parking in any street in the borough between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. " Even if we get them out of bed every hour to shift their trucks we shall have gained otir point," he commented.
