Canieronian has proved a useful stake earner, having won £4,257 for seven wins and 14 minor placings. Difficult Task. Golden Souvenir will find his task a very difficult one in the Challenge Stakes, whefe he has to concede over 2st to such'brilliant two-year-olds as Blue Trout and Palm Bearer. . 1 Runaway. , If a suitable apprentice can be secured, for Runaway in the Myross Handicap, he should add another success to his credit at Invercargill tomorrow. ~■-'' Great Autumn. The Great Autumn Handicap, in which Signal Officer and Bruce have been installed favourites, has fined down considerably with the final payment. '.With a field of 10 it should still provide the best race of the day. Official Inquiry. An inquiry was held into the handling of Findon in the Socfeburn Handicap by h'is jdfckey, G. IR. \ Tattersall. After Tattersall gave evidence the stewards decided that his explanation be accepted, and no further action was taken. v ' Good Record. Psalm has yet to be beaten out of a place, and if the heavy going to-morrow does not hamper her, she looks sure, to add another success to the splendid record of five wins in seven starts which she has already compiled. Change of Luck.' ■ G. A. McKay, had a welcorne change of luck when he won five races during the first two days of the lliverton meeting. .In each case the' horses were -handled by J. W. Dooley, who has : always been associated with this trainer's stable. Promising Novice. Detain put in a good run at the end of the Courtenay Handicap last Monday to beat everything bar the winner. He is engaged over more ground at ' Riccarton to-morrow, and promises to , he very hard to keep out of the money. First Success. Wane, winner of the Opawa Handicap .at Riccarton. is said to be one of «'.' the'biggest horses in training. at Ric- '""""■ carton at the present time. His win on Tuesday marked his first success. : He is a four-year-old gelding by_ Defaulter ~out of Moonbeam, and it is possible he will be tried as a jumper later. ' '."'''

Nearing His Best. Double Cross improved on his first day's performance at Riccarton to finish second to Atreus on Tuesday and appears to be nearing his best again. He is engaged in the Waltham Handicap to-morrow but he will probably find ' Wantwooda tough proposition. Foxchase. . Foxchase has been running good races in recent weeks without winning one. His biggest handicap at present appears to be his inability to secure ;i handy position early. Foxchase is quite at home under winter conditions, and at his present weight.will not be long in collecting a stake. Wingatui Horses Successful. Wingatui trained horses met with great, success at the Riverton especially on the first day when they collected five races. The second day also proved.to be very successful, local stables accounting for half the programme, while they were credited with one winner on the concluding day. Southland Steeplechase. - With, the prospect of a heavy track at Invercargill, Arabian Night will be in his element. He has yet to win over the big country, but the brush fences at the Southland centre should not be ranch trouble to him. Lisheen will also appreciate the lighter fences and may make amends for his Riverton failure. Brilliant Sprinter. ; i Wantwood justified his favouritism-in the Templeton Handicap by scoring very convincingly., He ran a promising race on the previous day in the Great Easter Handicap and against the rather weak field which contorted the former event on Tuesday he was never asked to produce his best in the run home. Successful Jockey. !R. Heasley gave further evidence of his capabilities as a crosscountry horseman when he swept the board in the* steeplechases on the concluding two days at Riverton. On the first day one of his mounts, Page's Raid, ran third, while the other. Steward, broko down during the running of,.the Great Western and had to be pulled up. Outsider Scores. ' The eight-year-old Beau Pere gelding Atreus paid more than a quarter of a century when he won the Christchurch Handicap on Tuesday.' His only other success this season was scored at Greymouth last December.. When he won at Riccarton he went to the front at the end of two furlongs and. forced the pace all the way to register the smart time of 1.39 1-5. Better Suited. Red Pickle, who failed to see out the mile and a-quarter in the Autumn Plate after leading in the early stages, will be better suited by the distance attached to the Giincradk Handicap at Riccarton to-morrow, 'and may make amends. The Salmagundi gelding invariably pulls hard in faces and this does not help his chance to run 1 out'a long journey. When he can be induced to race-more quietly, especially in the early stages of a race, he will be seen to better advantage.
