CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly- meeting of the Council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce was held last evening. The president (Mr C..J. Darracott) was in, the-chair, and'present were Messrs C. J. Wood, A. S. Falconer, A. de Beer, H. T. Irving, A. V. Gain, J. F. Poole, H. I. Sinclair, A. C. Stephens, H. Archbold A. B Callender, W. G. Nicholson, H. H. Forward, D. H. Shortt, L. M. Satterthwaite, F. M. Halsted, A. W. Paterson, and S. R. Whyte. ALBERT STREET EXTENSION. It was a recommendation from the Local Industries and Civic Affairs Committee that the support of the chamber should be offered to the City Council in urging a speedy, undertaking of the work in connection with the Albert street extension. It had also been decided to confer with Cr L. J. Ireland as to the best way of giving publicity to the scheme and having an early poll of ratepayers taken. It had' further been agreed to ask if separate polls of ratepayers are to bo taken on the matter and the city transport system; or whether they would be taken together at the one poll.—The recommendation was approved. TROLLY BUS SERVICE. In order to have an efficient trolly bus service in operation for the centennial in 1948, it was, decided that the chamber should confer with Cr J. Mcßae to see if the obtaining_ of a limited number of trolly buses (after the approval of the ratepayers had been obtained) could be accelerated. " DUMPING "■ OF MAGAZINES. The executive reported that a letter from the New Zealand Publishers' Association concerning the " dumping'" of overseas magazines on the New Zealand market had been referred to the Headmasters' Association. The association had replied stating that it was prepared to support any steps the chamber might take to improve the standard of literature in New Zealand. It had been decided to refer the subject to the Associated Chambers for comment. PROVINCIAL PUBLICITY. The director of the Dunedin Development Council (Mr M. S. Myers) wrote stating that Dunedin firms had been circularised regarding the .decision of the Junior Chamber of Commerce to undertake the production of a pictorial booklet dealing with the scenic attractions of the Dunedin and Otago. seeking the financial support of the business community.
