SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) Mr Christopher James Shaw, who died at his residence in Milton on Friday, was a well-known and popular resident of the town. * He was the only son of Mr and Mis Christopher Shaw, and was born in Scotland 52 years ago. He came to New Zealand with his parents 49 years ago, the family residing iu Clinton for abont nine months prior to taking up residence in Milton. The deceased was educated at the Toko District High School, and on leaving, worked at Bruce Woollen Mills. He served in World War 1. for about 4i years, and on his return again resumed work at the woollen mills. He was a member of Loyal Milton Lodge (M.U.). the Milton Municipal Brass Band. U.S.A., and Toko Football Clab. In 1921, he married Miss Jean Read, of Milton, and she survives him. together with two daughters and a sonMrs Ron. Hand. Miss Hilda, and James, all of Milton. The funeral on Monday was well-attended. The Rev. S. T. Nicholls officiated, while members of the band, lodge, and R.S.A. acted as pall-bearers. N.G.. Bro. T. Haynes read the lodge service, and Mr J. W. Keogh the R.S.A. service. The band played ' Nearer My God to Thee " at the residence, and Bandsman W. Kent sounded the ' Last Post ' at the graveside. The death took place at Balelutha on Saturday of Mrs Christina Jenkins. She was well-known and highly respected, and was for some years a member of the Balelutha ladies' bowling club. She is survived by her husband and one son. Mr Ivan Jenkins, ot Balelutha. R.S.A. The twentieth annual meeting of the Milton-Bruce R.S.A. was held on Saturday night, Mr J. W. Keogh pre* siding over a large attendance. The balance sheet showed a credit of £3O 3s 9d in the social fund, £lO 10s 7d in the employment fund. £33 10s in the •Nissen fund, £144 Is lOd in the general fund, and £1 in the building fund. The membership stood at 239, of whom 148 were members of the Second N.Z.E.F. The.election of officers resulted: President, Mr C. P. Keppel; senior vice-president, Mr L. G. North; junior, Mr H. G. Hamilton; secretary, Mr A. J. Currie: treasurer, Mr J. Gray; committee, Messrs J. W. Keogh, C. W. Keinan. S. F. Corbett, 1- F. Thomson. L. M. Scott, H. S. Adam. W. T. Pringle. The association representative on the Rehabilitation Committee reported a busy period. He stated that five local men had been settled on farms at a cost of over £20,000, while another three were ready for settlement. Five Milton men had been granted loan* for houses, 20 for furniture, and one for business. Mr Cullen was accorded a vote of thanks for his services. A resolution was carried, after some discussion, authorising the committee to take all necessary steps towards tho acquisition by purchase or lease of a hall for R.S.A. purposes, and to make additions thought necessary. It was mentioned that there was a possibility of the defence hall being procured. Congratulations were extended to Balelutha R.S.A. and Citizens' committer on their efforts in raising about £3,000 for a hall in a few weeks. PRESENTATIONS.

Before ordinary business was commenced at the Bruco Countv Council on Monday opportunity was "taken to make, a presentation of a chelae for four,months' salary as a retiring allow- . ance and a fireside chair as a per*ia,-»! - gift from the councillors to Mr J. H. Bateman, who recently retired alter <o years as inspector and engineer. --.Li making the presentation, the chairman, Mr A. Higgs, paid, a tribute .to Mr Bateman's services, and wished him all happiness in his well-earned'retire-ment. His remarks were endorsed by several councillors and Mr" Alex. Renton, an ex-councillor Cr A. Craig, on behalf of the councillors, presented Mr Renton with an eiderdown quilt in recognition of his services on the council for a period of over 25 years. PERSONAL. Mr H. Wiggins, who has been postmaster at Balelutha for tho past few months, left on Sunday for Rotorua. During hie short stay in Balelutha Mr Wiggins proved a popular officer, and was also an active member of the bowling club. Mr F. W.-- Bailey, at present at Queenstown, has been appointed postmaster at Balelutha. Mr and Mrs William Hyslop, who are leaving Waronui after a long residence to take up home in Milton, were entertained by their friends and were the recipient of a well-filled! envelope as a token of appreciation. Mr G. G. Woodhead, who made the presentation, referred to the sterling qualities of the recipients. SCOTTISH SOCIETY. There was a good attendance at the Bruce Scottish Society's monthly social, Mrs S. V. Martin presiding. The programme was very enjoyable, those contributing being Miss A. Bateman, Mrs Hand 1 . Mrs W. Smith, songs; Piper J. McGrouther, bagpipe selections; Misses Keenan and Carruthers, vocal trio; Misses O'Sullivan and Athne Wisely, tap and sword dance respectively; Spence sisters, duet; Mr Alex. Allison and two sons, instrumental trio. Supper and dancing brought an enjoyable evening to a close. FOOTBALL. The Union Club opened the season on Saturday, when a match was played against a Lawrence team at Lovell's. Flat, the result being a win for the visitors by 15 points to 8. Weather conditions" were not the best, but, despite this, some good form was shown by both teams, particularly in the for-. wards. R.S.A. APPEAL. Latest returns in the Clutha district R.S.A. appeal bring the total to £2,685.. to which is to be added returns from the dugout on Saturday night (over £120), and the concert on Monday night, for which over £54 was taken in reserves. It is estimated that close on £3,000 will be realised, ancl there is still the gala day (postponed from lastSaturday) to come later.
