HARBOUR YACHTING

m EHTRSES FOR FULTON SHIELD Thirty-two boats competed in the annual harbour race for all-comers* yachts for the Fulton Shield on Saturday afternoon. The event, which was conducted by the North-east Harbour Boating Club, was sailed over a conrs* extending from the Victoria wharf down the eastern channel to a buoy off Rainbird's. and thence back to the finishing line at sfacandrew Bay. A light and flaky breeze prevented several of the smaller yachts from crossing the line on time, and they lost a fair amount of their handicap. By the time the Idlealong and X class boats were sent away the fleet had begun to spread out, and when the scratch boat, Shadow, was signalled to start 20 minutes after gunfire the fleet was weil on its way. On the lead down the channel in the light south-east breeze Julie, capably sailed by D. Cabena. opened up a fair gap on the other small craft. Tha Idlealongs and 14-footers followed farther back in two groups, one working well out into the narbonr, while Ok other kept close inshore. The advantage of a better breeze enabled the former group to establish a lead of threa minutes on the other section of the fleet at Cballis's pile, and this position was maintained at the club's shed, where Jnlie still held the lead with Avenger coming up fast in company with Siren, Evelyn, and Eileen. The balance of the fleet i>assed about two minutes later. The positions remained unchanged to the top mark. and on the beat home Awager weathered Julie and crossed the finishing line one minute ahead. The following were the sailing timet of the first four boats:—Avenger (A. Thomas) 6min, 2h 6min 6|sec, 1; Julio (D. Cabena), 15min, 2h 7mm s&ee, 2; Eileen (J.
