HIGHLAND GATHERING

CALEDONIAN SPORTS DOMINION RECORD BEATEN A competent standard of performance, large entries that resulted in spirited competition, and the varied nature of the programme were aspects that were responsible for the eightyfifth annual sports gathering on Saturday, of the Caledonian Society of Otago being one of the most successful meetings of the society in recent years. In addition there was a crowd-ofc over 5,000, despite, the heavy overcast that followed a sunny, morning. Conditions were favourable for fast times in the track and field events. The crowd was treated -to the spectacle of a Dominion record being broken in the twomile walk event by J. R. Hyslop, the present holder of' the one and threemile walk titles. He was in rare form. and gave a stylish i exhibition to lower the record that was established by I. Driscollj of Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay, in 1937. Driscoll's time was 13min 57 3-ssec, and Hyslop's :tiine was 13min 41 l-ssec—l6 2-ssec 'faster. Hyslop, •wlio was accorded an* ovation by the crowd, was competing in the two-mile wak handicap, in which' he conceded ro> fb 520yds, and he-won easily by ®Qyds, his judgment being perfect as he Jook in the field. Hyslop is a memiber of the Anglican Club, and he established a record in the three-mile walk event at Wanganui a few weeks ago at ;fcfee national meeting. ' ■ The most spectacular event was provided by 14 teams in the women's marching competition, this event being controlled by the Otago Marching and Recreation Association, and attracting several entries from outside Dunedih. The music was provided by the Burns Pipe Band, and the Joe Brown Cup was won by the Blair Athol team (Roslyn Mb.., 4), while.the Ferguson Cup for , the best leader in the marching com-' petition was awarded to Miss Isobelle ' Sutherland, of the Oarriafu Woollen Mills (Tuis) team. :An outstanding performer in the women's events was Miss S. Hardmah, of the Otago Ladies' Club,- who won three handicap events arid two in the intarhouse competition. She won the ,100yds race in 11 1-osec, which represents one of the fastest performances recorded by a woman/in Dunedin. special trophies won during the afternoon . .were presented by the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron). The president of the gathering was Mr James W. Young, and the success of the meeting was partly due to his committee, and also to the officials of the Otago Amateur • Athletic Association, who controlled the track and field events. ;;; The following * abbreviations are used:—Aug., Anglican; C.S., Civil Service; 0., Otago Ladies;,U., University; ,/T., Toko.; T.C., Training College; Cav., Caversham; C.U., Celtic United; Mor., Morningtori; St. K., St. Kilda; 8., ■Baptist;- M., Mataura; C.F.H., Cadbury Fry Hudson; L., Leith; K., King's High, School; 0.8.H.5., Otago Boys' High School; H., Hillside.
