WAIPORI ELECTRICITY
RAISING OF DAM CONSTRUCTION NEARLY COMPLETED The long-range view the City Council was taking of electricity development at Waipori was alluded to by Cr L. M. Wright, chairman of the Electricity Committee, when informing the City Council last night of the progress made on the raising of the dam. The completion within the next four weeks of the raising of the Waipori dam to 113 ft would mark the end of a phase in the long-range policy of ensuring in the future an ample supply of electric power for the city, said Cr Wright. He added that the "contractors had completed their work on the Edgar E. Stark bridge, and a suitable function to open it to traffic would be held as soon as the work on the darn was finished, towards the end of this month. “ The demand for electricity is increasing every year, and -the next part of the plan to be submitted to the council for its approval at an early date will be the construction of No. 3 and No. 4 stations lower down the Waipori River, or to adopt the alternative proposal to proceed with a much bigger scheme—the construction of another dam at Hill Creek—which will need the sanction of the Government,” said Cr Wright. “ The carrying out of this comprehensive scheme would guarantee the city enough electricity for many years to come.”
