D.J.C. RACES

Second Day Prospects Different Going To-morrow Aurora Australis in Big Event [By the Critic]. The second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting (the first since 1941) will be held to-morrow, and though the fields are lighter in numbers than are usually seen at this centre, there is ample material to make good racing. Big fields are not necessary to make racing interesting, and nowadays the public will-gamble on any sized field. At the time of writing the weather is not promising for to-morrow, but the forecast from the Meteorological Office is "fair to fine." The rain that has fallen will have taken the sting out of the going, and may upset the form shown last week, but even if the rain continues throughout to-day it is not likely to make the going heavy. The first race is timed to start at 1 1 a.m., and trains to arrive in time for the first race will leave Dunedin at 9.5, 9.45, 10.0, and 10.15 a.m. Investors are reminded that under the present totalisator management the machines will be closed sharply on the scheduled times.

THE FIELDS

11.0— *LLANTON HURDLES. £3OO.

Phil Boa, Young Monanui, and Sir Saladin filled the places last week, and the newcomers are Amorlad, Tenorman, Filibeg, and Pink Clover. It was Phil Boa's 'first start this season when he won last week, and unless the race has done him harm an extra 91b is not likely to stop him. Young Monanui was inclined to run about at his fences, but the experience gained in last Saturday's race should' benefit him. Sir Saladin was racing next the rails all the way last week, a position he does not like, and if he is ridden differently to-morrow he is likely to shape better. Those behind The Raker were very confident last week, but all the steam was taken out of him when he hit a fence hard about five furlongs from home. Amorlad is_ reported to have schooled better during the week, and with his pace on the flat he must be labelled dangerous, but it is worth remembering that most of his good performances have been recorded on yielding to soft going. The others do not appeal. The three placed horses, as they finished last week, are the likely favourites. Should • the going be. soft chances of Amorlad and Sir Saladin will be improved.

11.40NOVICE HANDICAP, £250. 7f.

Unless there is something good among the newcomers Lance Art, Putechan, Quadrille, Red Pickle, Smile Along, The Dictator, and Whakawatea, the maidens are a poor lot. Miss Hula, Supreme, and Robot finished behind Triumphal last week, and Petty Cash, who was badly left, finished well into seventh place. Victory Flight, who started a good favourite, found seven furlongs too far for him, and is not likely to show any more stamina to-morrow. Miss Hula, who will probably have a 71b allowance, Supreme, and Petty Cash may be the best fancied. 12.30

Bracket: Grill and Patmos. This should provide an excellent betting race between Wantwood, Merry Lancer, Gold Song, and Wild Cry. There was only a length between the first two last Saturday, and Wantwood will now meet Merry Lancer on 41b worse terms. Neither Gold Song nor Wild Cry raced up to his true form, but the race is likely to have done Gold Song the more good. Grill's fastfinishing run last Saturday will bring him into demand, and he meets Wantwood on 101 b and Merry Lancer on 81b better terms. The newcomers are Hunting Charm, Killarney, Patmos, and Astros. Patmos won well over six furlongs at Gore last month, finishing as if another furlong would not have worried her. Bracketed with Grill, Patmos may be made favourite, with strong support also forthcoming for Wantwood, who will be having his last start in hack company, and Merry Lancer. Hunting Charm is v seen at his best when the going is soft. 1.15

If Lisheen is started he will probably be made favourite, but he will be up against a smart lot of sprinters. Last week Great Coon's rider lost a lot of ground at the start through thinking the others would be called back from such a straggly despatch. He ran up to the leaders at the home turn, but the effort was too much for him. He is likely to have a 51b allowance again in to-morrow's race. Both Bonny Flight and Lyndal were slow to begin, and the furlong shorter distance is likely to suit them. The newcomers are John Gay, Lisheen, and St. Nattar, a useful tr.io. If John Gay races up to. the form he showed at Trentham in January, when, in receipt of 111 b, he finished second to Master Dash on the first day, and with 8.8 a close-up third to Master Dash 9.10 and Lisheen 7.8 on the third day in 1.24 f, he will take a power of beating. John Gay meets Lisheen on 71b better terms than at Trentham.

On paper John Gay should beat Lisheen, but their most dangerous opponents are likely to be Lyndal and Great Coon. St. Nattar has run some of bis best races when the track has been easy, and Great Coon has also shown ability to handle yielding going. 2.0 WINGATUI HANDICAP, £SOO. lm 3f.

Eastern Coin is engaged against a weaker field later on in the afternoon. Aurora Australis was the _ unlucky runner in last week's big handicap, and then beat all but the winner very easily. On paper she appears to be the bet of the afternoon. Sing Sing was finishing on the best of the others. Tring ran poorly last Saturday, and would have to 'improve a lot to have any chance. Aurora Australis, Sing Sing, and Royal Lancer are the likely favourites. Pride of Mossburn is the mudlark of those engaged, and his chance will be greatly improved if the course is on the heavy side. 2.45 DOMINION HANDICAP. £3OO. For two-year-olds. sf.

The two-year-olds are not a highclass lot, and unless Grand Pal has improved during the week both Stagestruck and Cipher should beat him again. The others were completely outclassed in last week's race. 3.30 FAREWELL HANDICAP, £350. lm

Bracket: Sea Power and Prize Ring. Red Prize is likely to be reserved for the next race, and Bonny Chela has a prior engagement. Sea Power carried 8.12 when he won last week, and is likely to again have an allowance. Sea Power beat his field, a better one than he meets to-morrow, so pointlessly last Saturday that he is likely to be installed a shortpriced favourite, with Ruling Moment and Rubble next in demand.

As Lance Wing, Lisheen, Eastern Coin, and Red Prize have prior engagements this field may be weakened in numbers. Prize Ring carried 8.5 J when he won so easily over a similar distance last Saturday, and is now set to meet Red Prize on 6£lb worse terms. But that would not have brought them together. " Unless Lisheen starts, this race looks a good thing for last week's winner. His most dangerous opponents are likely to be Dearo and Eagle Flight, if the latter races up to the form she showed early in the season. Prize Ring has shown he can handle any sort of . going.
