OBITUARY
HON. V. A. WARD The Hon. Vincent Aubrey Ward, M.L.C., whose death is announced from Wellington, was born at Bluff on January 4, 1888, and was educated at the Bluff State Primary School and St. Patrick's College, Wellington. Ha joiried the staff of the National Bank at Wellington, and in 1907 went to England, where he spent some time with the firm of Messrs James Morrison and Son, merchants, and Lloyda Insurance Company. He went to New York in 1908, where he spent a period with the United States Steel Corporation before going to Montreal in 1911 as joint manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company. During the Great War he served in the Motor Boat Patrol, having gained his commission in Canada in 1915. In 1918 Mr .Ward went to New York under the British Ministry of Shipping, and returned to New Zealand in 1920, when he joined the firm- of Messrs J. G. Ward and Co. at Christchurch. In 1922 he be* came his father's (Sir Joseph Ward) private secretary, and was M.P. for Invercargill in 1930-31. In 1934'he was appointed to the Legislative Council, and became secretary of the W e l un &" ton Patriotic Council in September, 1940. Mr Ward was married in 1927 to the daughter of Mr Robert Petre.
