PARADE IN CALCUTTA LONDON, January 24. The British Army " evacuated " Calcutta yesterday and handed the city over to the Quisling Indian National army, says the ' Daily Mail's ' Calcutta correspondent. More than 1,0Q0,000 betel-chewing Bengalis gave the khaki-clad force a howling welcome as it marched in, headed_ bv the recently pardoned "Majorgeneral " Shah Nawaz. The procession, which was three miles long and included light armoured cars and motorcycle squads, was in honour of the birthday of Subhas Chandra Bose. Two davs before the demonstration all A.T.S., F.A.N.Y.5.,, and W.41.N.5., personnel had been warned to keep a house curfew all-day, while Calcutta was out of bounds to British ■ officers and other ranks alike. Most European civilians kept to their houses for fear of encountering trouble.
