CROQUET

DOMINION TOURNEY TITLE-HOLDER DEFEATED (P.A.) TIMARU, January 23. Further * progress was made to-day in the Dominion croquet tournament, although rain stopped play for half an hour in the morning and again for a short period in the afternoon. By defeating the holder of the title, Mrs I. Waihwright (Hamilton), Mrs G. Metcalfe (Dunedin) caused the first upset in the women's singles. Another good game was that between A. G. P. Ross and H. A. Penn, both of Christcliurch, in the first round of the men's singles. Ross with a long shot' got away to a good break, taking one ball to rover. Penn then took control to make a score, 'but Ross, hitting another long shot, made another break and .finished the first game, 26-7. Penn got a good start in the second and looked the likely winner, but Ross hit in and won the match with the game at 26-16. In the first round of the open singles W. S. Beamish (Christcliurch) had a good win from Mrs E. H. Smith (Auckland),_ the match going to three games. Beamish was put out in the next r"ound by Mrs C. Watkins (Hastings), who had another victory over Mrs Smith in the second round of the women's sinales. The second division of the Handicap Singles was won by Mrs A. G. Rawlinson. (3j), Methven, who in the semi-

final disposed of Mrs G. T. Stevens (3i), Invercargill, and went on to play Mrs J. Rhodes (2*), Dunedin. This match produced good croquet, and was closely contested until near the finish, when Mrs R'awlinsori took her bisque, thus deciding the score in her favour, 26-18.
