GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL

ANNIVERSARY FUNCTIONS The function set down loi ihe second day of the Girls' High School seventyfifth anniversary celebrations is a garden party at the school, and in conjunction with this an exhibition .will be held which should prove of much interest to all ex-pupils. Examples of drawing and painting by early and recent pupils will show how styles in these branches of art have changed with the years. Needlework and arts and crafts will also have a prominent place in the display. School reports of a bygone day will sefirve to show that, though the curriculum may change, girls themselves do not alter' very much so far as their work is concerned,. These have always heeu the good and the not quite so good, and the school report tells the whole story. Perhaps the most popular section of the exhibition will be the photographs, which will include groups taken at different times from 1871 onwards. There is a strange fascination in photographs from the past, and ex-girls will spend some interesting and enjoyable moments identifying themselves, their, companions, and their teachers. A single exhibit which is sure to attract attention is a history book which belonged to Mrs M. G. 'Burn, the school's first principal. On the flyleaf is Mrs Burn's name in her own handwriting, and the title, page carries these impressive words: " Elements of General History, Ancient and Modern, by Professor Lvtler (Lord Woodhouselee). Ist Edition, 1801; 2nd Edition. 1844:" 'The book, a second edition copv, appears.to have been much used, and no doubt many an early pupil suffered an attack of mental indigestion while trving to assimilate its very " solid " looking contents.
