HAWKE CUP MATCH
MANAWATU IN STRONG POSITION (P.A.) PALMERSTON N., Jan. 23. A surprise was caused in the Hawke Cup cricket match between Hawke's Bay (the challengers)'and Manawatu (the holders) to-day when the visitors proved unable to cope with the Manawatu bowling, and were dismissed in the first innings for 95 runs in reply to the home team's first innings score of 223. Since the conditions have been altered to allow a decision to be given on the first innings, Manawatu is now in a very strong position. When stumps were drawn on the previous day Hawke's Bay had made 28 without Joss. Heavy rain overnight and this morning caused a postponement of play until 2.10 p.m. The visiting batsmen were not nappy on the soft wicket, from which the ball was rising sharply at times. Downes and Miller, medium-fast bowlers, claimed four wickets in 15 minutes, the visitors' total then being only 32 runs. The Hawke's Bay .captain, H. Reaney, stopped the rot for a long period, but was unable to do much scoring. After the tea adjournment 1 Downes and Miller were again siiccesslful against the tail-enders, claiming four wickets in 17 minutes. When stumps were drawn at 6.30 p.m. Manawatu had one wicket down for 38 runs. The match will be. concluded to-morrow.
